I’ve just been booked for another speaking event this month. Here’s how it happened.
The invitation arrived and I was excited. Immediately good feelings about the organiser, the community and the material they wanted to hear about from me.
Then my head kicked in.
The location involves traveling an hour each way, it’s a 2-hour event and 10-minute speaking slot. Currently, there’s only a handful in the audience. So the head says no – too little ROI.
And immediately I was disappointed. I felt sad, shoulders slumped, like a kid who’s been denied a treat.
So I called back and changed my mind to hear “oh that’s fantastic, you’ve made my day” from the organiser. And once again, I’m excited.
The numbers say no, but the feelings say heck yes. So I’m going with my feelings.
These are the sorts of situations that AI won’t get right for you because they are not logical decisions.
I momentarily forgot all my own principles of Living by Design – one of the biggest being “will I love this?”. In many cases, I use this to test whether a seeming-yes event is for me or not. The head says yes, but the feelings – for me – are no. This time it was the opposite way around and I missed it.
Really listen in to how things feel. There are nerves in the gut linked to the brain so maybe this is evidence of the reality of ‘gut feelings’. But in the meantime, you’ll know the strength of those gut reactions for yourself.
The modern world focuses almost exclusively on head decisions – on logic.
But a life by design – one that feels amazing from the inside too – requires more than logic to achieve. This morning, I got that wrong, but I’m back on track now.
Here’s 2 things to consider as you read this:
- What are you currently doing that feels wrong to you?
- What are you not doing that you would love to be doing?
These allow us to hear from our other senses even when the brain in control.
These sort of distinctions lie at the heart of my coaching now. Previously I created a logically-great life and it almost killed me. I hated it. But now, I live an abundant-feeling, fun life and it is questions like those above (and the determination to follow through on decisions arising from them) that have led me here.
They will lead you too if you allow them. And I would love to support you on that journey.
