This message appeared in a group chat I’m part of this weekend.
I wasn’t in the hospital this weekend. Were you? I hope not.
I had a lovely weekend with Catherine. I ran this morning, our fridge is full and bills are paid.
Elsewhere – people you know are struggling. Illness, heartbreak, sick children, money worries, dreading medical results.
Sometimes we need to appreciate what we have. Health, home, family, safety, money in the bank, clean water.
These aren’t small things.
You can pursue your career or business because these basics are already present. Without them, you’d have little time for dreams because you’d be focused on survival.
This isn’t doom and gloom – it’s the opposite. We’re fortunate. You’re reading this on a device with power and internet. You have somewhere safe to sit. Services paid for.
How many small miracles happen daily in our lives? How fortunate are we?
It’s easy to focus on what’s wrong. The difficult client. The nasty email. The cancelled contract.
Yes, these are annoying. But perspective matters. Slow internet feels frustrating, but it’s a first-world problem. I can complain about download speeds because I don’t have bigger concerns right now.
How fortunate am I.
An Action To Take Right Now
Grab a blank paper and pen. Think through today so far – what have you used, experienced, eaten, enjoyed? Write it down. A good night’s sleep? That’s a bed, bedding, safe shelter, heating. Morning routine? That’s running water, toiletries, towels.
This isn’t about guilt. It’s about gratitude. It’s about recognising the abundance in an ordinary day.
I bet you could list 30 things you’re grateful for. Want a challenge? Go for 50.
Let me know how many you find.
Perspective helps. Remembering all that goes right makes it easier to handle the hurdles.
