I THINK WE ARE BORN SLOW AND CONNECTED TO OURSELVES

We are born having very simple needs – comfort, food, to be clean and safe and warm.

Over time, we are “educated” into fast and thinking-is-king and that results are the only thing that matters.

We lose that connectedness, slow and awareness of our bodies and feelings. We become wedded to the idea that happiness lies outside of us – perhaps in someone else or in possessions or achievements.

But that baby is happy and content and smiles and sleeps peacefully without any of those “wins”.

Who has got it right?

As usual, I believe the balance lies in the middle somewhere. We must grow up and become independent, able to support others and be useful in society. But along the way we accumulate ideas that asking for help shows weakness. To need things for yourself is selfish. That doing is the only measure of value.

That the accumulation of wealth, power or possessions (or all three) is the sole determinant of success.

Those who seek to live like our parents or grandparents “drop out” or are weird or strange or dangerous. To live off-grid is somehow subversive. To grow food in your own garden or collect rainwater is a crime.

To read certain books is likely to turn you into a terrorist or a mad person or somehow make you change your sexuality or gender.

How did life get to be so complex and so far away from the simple eat, sleep, rest, work at something useful to society and be happy?

How is it that to seek to return to that way of living is a threat?

These questions are far too big for right now. But ask yourself this – all that doing, all those things, all that money you spend on stuff for your children, all those hours you spend at work – do they make you or those you love happy?

And if not, what can you do to change that?
